The Coolest Rooftop Bars in Athens to Enjoy the Best Views
We moved to Athens because we love its views, food, and people. That’s why we visit its rooftops all the time. They are the best places to enjoy the city.
There are wonderful viewpoints all around Athens. Since there aren’t tall towers in the city, you can see it all. Besides, the weather is pleasant all year round. Athens is a city to enjoy outdoors.
We have prepared the following list with our favorite rooftop bars in Athens. There is something for everyone. We are convinced you will find the right one for you.
A for Athens
A for Athens is a fantastic hotel smack in the center of town. It’s the tallest building overlooking Monastiraki square. Thus, the unobstructive views of the Acropolis and beyond.
The hotel has 5 floors of rooms and a fantastic rooftop bar on the 6th. There is a lift. It opens from 7 AM for breakfast and closes past midnight, depending on the crowd.
They offer lunch, dinner, deserts, and cocktails. We like its simple design and cool music. However, the music cranks up over the weekends. We’ve even danced till 2AM!
Anglais
Anglais is a well-kept secret visited mostly by us locals. The bar is on a tiny street one block from Monastiraki square and meters from Hadrian’s library.
You will see the Acropolis, the library, and all of Athens’ peaks. Due to its location, it’s a great place to watch the sunset. It opens 11 AM to 1 AM weekdays, and till 2 AM weekends.
They offer cocktails, wine, spirits, and delicious chocolate. Some finger food, pizza, and deserts to eat. They do have heaters in winter. The LGBT friendly bar is a bit small. They tend to play cool rock music.
Hyper Astro Bar
Though they do serve fantastic cocktails and wine, we go to Hyper Astro Bar for the food. And the views too. The leafy restaurant is on top of the 4-star Athens Tower Hotel.
It’s in the corner of Monastiraki square. Therefore, it offers memorable views of the Acropolis and the city. They do have umbrellas for summer, and heaters for winter.
The food is superb, in particular their salads. Opens from 8:30 AM till 2am AM. It’s a perfect place for dates under the stars and surrounded by plants. Pricey but worth every penny.
Sky Bar
The iconic Mount Lycabettus is the tallest peak in Athens. The 900 feet (270 m) hill towers above the city’s fanciest neighborhood, Kolonaki. You will immediately recognize it from its huge Greek flag.
The Sky Bar is on top of Mount Lycabettus. You can see the entire city, including the Acropolis, and the sea. You can climb up there or take the lift.
It opens from 10 AM till 12:30 AM and offers all types of food and cocktails. We usually go there to catch the sunset, caress the cats, and have coffee.
Savvas
We eat at Savvas at least once each week. We walk there from home. The original restaurant opened in 1922 and was the first one to offer kebabs in Athens.
They moved to their current location in the 1960s. The restaurant occupies an entire neoclassical building half a block from Monastiraki square. The views from its rooftop are unforgettable.
Their dakos salads, gyros, and kalamaki are delicious. The service is impeccable. Considering the quality and location, it is not expensive. It opens from 9 AM till past 3 AM!
Public Syntagma
If you like books and views you have to visit Public. The restaurant crowns the Public shop. They sell electronics and books. They have a lot of books in English and other languages.
The restaurant presides over Syntagma square and faces the Parliament. It opens from 9 AM till 11 PM. We usually go in the afternoons to read while enjoying the views and coffee.
Though it has an unbeatable location, not many tourists visit. The food is pretty good. Remember to pay for your books before going up to read them!
Hill Athens
We saved the best for last. Hill Athens is just around the corner from home. We go there all the time! The restaurant and bar is on our favorite square in the city, Jacqueline de Romilly in Thisseio.
Apostolou Pavlou is the pedestrian street that circles the Acropolis and the Agora. Everyone visits to walk and socialize. Hill Athens has tables on the terrace overlooking the Agora and on the rooftop.
The restaurant has it all: spectacular views, top quality food, superb wine tasting, and Greek hospitality. It opens from 9 AM till 11 PM. Eat and drink like a king and then walk all the way to Nymphs Hill, the best viewpoint in Athens!
