What to Do in Lindos

Roam the Streets of Lindos

The first thing you have to do when you arrive is turn off your phone and walk about without a plan. Every single street in Lindos Town is beautiful. Lindos covers the slope of a hill that overlooks the sea. Hence the epic views at every corner.

Its epicenter is the Church of the Holy Virgin from the 13th Century. You will recognize it from its tall stone bell tower. The inside of the temple will take your breath away. Lindos Old Town is a maze of isles and cute little squares.

You have to go up and down quite a bit, so take your time and admire the white washed houses and plants. Wear comfortable shoes.

Visit Lindos Acropolis

No matter how many archaeological remains you’ve seen in your life, Lindos Acropolis is in a league of its own. It crowns a 381 foot (116 m) cliff that towers above the sea and the town.

You will see massive pillars, gates, and arches. The Temple of Athena dates back to 300 BC. It’s inside a fortress built by Crusaders in the 14th Century. Don’t forget to check the 13th Century Byzantine Chruch of Agios Ioannis.

When you are there you can actually feel the greatness of Greece. No other place in Europe has such long and glorious history. It’s a steep climb up. Therefore, go up at your own pace. We almost forgot the views! Trust us, you will never forget them.

Spend Some Time on the Beach

Lindos beach is beneath the town. It’s an easy 10 minute walk down. Going back up is a bit harder so take your time. The beach is stunning. Since it’s a cove under a cliff, it isn’t windy and it’s perfect for swimming and children.

Beach bunnies should visit Saint Paul’s Bay. It’s a 20 minute walk south from Lindos Town. The cove offers crystal blue waters. From the beach walk east to the cute Saint Paul Chapel and to the massive Matheos Agathos Rock.

Visit Sea Caves

A lot of tourists spend time on the beach and miss on the spectacular sea caves located on the eastern tip of the bay. We went swimming there directly from the beach. However, if you don’t want to swim, you can walk.

Do not forget your snorkeling gear. You can jump from the rocks into the sea, but be careful. If you want to walk about the stones, we advise wearing shoes. To our amazement, we went once during peak season and there were few people here. Most were crowded on the beach!

Hike

Walking is our favorite activity. In Lindos we walked for hours admiring the views. The easiest walk is to the Tomb of Cleobulus the Lindian. The 6th Century BC tomb may not be impressive, but the views across both sides of the headland are fantastic. On your way there, stop by the old windmill.

It’s a half an hour walk. There is no shade so avoid noon and wear comfortable shoes. It’s best to go in the afternoon.

We walked for an hour and a half to Elephant Rock, to the south. From Lindos go south to Saint Paul Bay, continue to Navarone Beach. Pefkos trekking area begins here. From there you can walk to Pefki Town on the coast.

Where to Stay in Lindos

Once you see Lindos you will regret not spending at least a night. We once spent an entire week and never had a dull moment. Besides, most tourists go for the day and leave. Nights in Lindos are magical.

Our favorite hotel in Lindos is Maris Lindos Suites & Apartments. It’s super close to the town, but so quite. The beach is a 2 minute walk away. The terraces have old trees and unbelievable views.

If you love the beach and have the money to splurge, stay at the uber-luxurious Aquagrand Exclusive Deluxe Resort. Granted, it’s 2 miles (3 km) from Lindos. That’s exactly why we enjoyed it so much! The hotel sits on a massive lot, with gardens, terraces, three pools and a dreamy beach.

Where to Eat and Drink

Lindos is a foodies’ paradise. The best restaurant on the beach is Palestra. The other two are not that good. The setting is idyllic and the food is top notch. Not expensive considering its class.

Though we are not vegans, we really enjoyed the food at T-Veg. They source their product from the area. Everything tasted so fresh! Plus we ate with unobstructed views of the town and the sea.

For coffee and homemade Pitas head to Village Cafe. It’s a great place to chill under vine leafs. Cocktails and wine we had at Courtyard Bar. The best rooftop bar in Lindos has jaw-dropping views of the Acropolis, great live music, and the best cocktails in town.

Useful Tips

We have to be honest. Lindos can be very crowded during the summer. Therefore, spend the night and enjoy the city early in the morning and in the afternoon.

The heat can be an issue during the summer. Thus, wear a hat and sunscreen. Do not exert yourself. Stop under a shade whenever needed.

Now, visiting off season is a great idea. We went once during the winter and had a ball. The temperature during the day hovers around 60 F (16 C), and at night around 45 F (6 C).

All we needed was a jacket. However, it can rain frequently. Wear proper shoes to avoid slipping and grab an umbrella.

If there’s a storm, consider yourself lucky. We enjoyed a surreal lightshow over the Mediterranean!
